Throwing touchdowns, bringing Hope

Every day almost 6000 children become orphans. Every 6 seconds a child dies of starvation. Every minute we have a choice: we can choose to help care for those orphans, to feed those hungry bellies, and to help those in need; or we can choose to look away and do nothing. What is your choice??? Don’t look away. Please choose to join JD’s TD Club and bring HELP and HOPE to those in need. Your donations will go to support Heavenly Hope Ministries(HHM) and its projects both in Africa & in the Cleveland area.

The Race Is On!

December 19th, 2009

Hi Everyone,
As many of you know, Terina and I are deeply involved in our ministry in countries in Africa. We are also involved in an organization called Athletes For Hope(www.athletesforhope.org). They are an organization made up of athletes from all sports trying to make a difference here in the U.S. and around the world. They have started a competition called Who Gives? Racing For A Cause. So for the next few weeks, I am going to be going head-to-head with 60 other athletes in a race to see who can raise the most money for their favorite charity. These athletes include Tony Hawk, Jeff Gordon, Mia Hamm, Warrick Dunn, Steve Nash, and Cal Ripken Jr. just to name a few. I chose to enter my foundation, the Dutton Family Foundation and Heavenly Hope Ministries, into the race. We are raising money to provide the basic needs of orphans living in our orphanages and on the streets, giving them food, shelter, clean water, and an education: I started this foundation in 1995 and since then we have personally seen the need for basic necessities around the world.
No donation is too small, and even a $10 donation will provide books and a uniform for a child. It also gets us one step closer to the grand prize of $10,000 , which would make a HUGE impact in the lives of these young children. Remember, all donations are tax-deductible.

There are a lot of great athletes in this race, so I am going to need all the help I can get in order to win. So check out the site at www.globalgiving.org/projects/needs-for-orphans/, tell all your friends, forward this email on to all your contacts, and help us support this ministry and bring these kids HOPE.

Thank you so much!

John
P.S. if you want to follow my progress or check out the competition, visit: www.globalgiving.org/athletes-for-hope.

Shouting It On The Rooftops

September 3rd, 2009

“Surely the Sovereign Lord does nothing without revealing His plan to his servants the prophets”
…Amos 3:7

10 years ago, John had just returned from Cleveland where he was just cut from the NFL after breaking his ankle 4 days into training camp. We headed back to Reno and while there went to a church service where a visiting pastor prophesied over him. To be honest, when he called us up we were both skeptical and cautious because we were completely unfamiliar with the spiritual gifts and their proper use, yet very familiar with all of the stories of false prophets. Yet, this man spoke things over both of us that only God himself could know and it got our attention. In this prophecy God spoke that something surprising, amazing (miraculous) was going to happen with John in football, in the NFL and in 2009. .
Why does it matter and why am I telling you??? Because according to Gods word, God uses prophecy as a way to show us that He knows the end before the beginning “I have told you now before it happens so that when it does happen you WILL believe”…John 14:29 and as I was really praying about whether or not to tell everyone I opened my bible and found the following verse: “What I tell you in darkness speak in the daylight, what is whispered in your ear proclaim from the rooftops”…Matthew 10:27
So were now sharing it with all of you and shouting it on the rooftops so to speak. :o )

After John was cut from Cleveland he went into the AFL. He broke his arm his first start and was done for the season. At this point it had been one set back after another. During playoffs I was praying and for the first time I heard God speak to me (“my sheep recognize my voice”…) and He said: “the Bowl is Johns”. So after that we believed that if the team was playing in the Arena Bowl John would be in it. FFWD to next season. John gets benched half way through the season though they had the best record in the league and in playoffs I clung to the word that God gave me “the bowl is Johns”. I knew if they made it to the championship John would somehow be playing in it. They lost in playoffs and during the off season we went to Reno. The first morning we were back we went to church and sure enough the visiting pastor was back (this was 3 years later) and right when we walked in we just felt in our spirits that out of the entire congregation we were going to be called up there. John was sitting in the pew in a full on sweat!!!! We were so nervous/anxious to hear the word of the Lord. He did call us up and prophesied again saying things about our family, my father, our marriage and Johns football and it was incredible. God does know everything, even secret things!!! One of the things he said was “your to get ready to see me move” and that “new opportunities were going to come” in football. So FFWD to the coming season and we just knew that something was going to happen so we waited to see what God would do. The second to last game of the regular season the QB went out w/ an injury and John came in.(for the record the other QB was since blessed with 2 championships, MVP and brand new car in Gods goodness back to Him) It was the second ever undefeated season on the line and Johns first game in. He had an incomplete pass on the last play and they lost the undefeated season!!! So I was just praying to God saying “God, I know you have us here, though it seems as though everything, every game and every opportunity ends up in failure, and closed doors, what’s going on”? As I answered Johns call during this prayer the Lord spoke to me again and I just blurted it out to John and said “Your going to play Arizona in the Arena Bowl and your going to win”. Now let me just explain that we weren’t even in playoffs yet and we had to win 3 playoff games in order to even get to the Bowl game and Arizona had to do the same. It was still over 5 weeks away from the Arena Bowl, but God knows!!

During this time, I was feeling as though it was something the Lord wanted me to share with the team before it took place as well and that the word wasn’t only for John & I but also for them so that “they would believe”… So we shared it in faith knowing that if it didn’t take place I would look like a crazy idiot!!! (If I said “the Lord said this would happen” after the Arena Bowl is over people would say “yeah right” and think I was making it up after the fact). So I knew we had to share it before hand. 5 weeks later, we played and beat Arizona in the Arena Bowl and John was the MVP. God was true to His word given to us through a pastor who prophesied over us and what he spoke to me (the Bowl is Johns).
Sure enough another opportunity did come as was spoken in the prophecy and John Elway called John and wanted to know if he wanted to come play for him in Colorado. We obviously did.

The next season was extremely rough being flipped off, booed, and having people chant the back ups name during every game. They were 2-14 and it was not a fun year.
“humility comes before honor”… FFWD to 2 seasons later and I’m sitting in the stands and the Lord speaks to me that we are going to play San Jose and Chicago in the playoffs and we are going to win. You have to understand again that at this point San Jose and Chicago hadn’t even made playoffs let alone win their playoff games and have it line up perfectly to actually play those 2 teams out of all the teams that make playoffs. Yet again, we felt the Lord wanted us to share it before hand so John told the entire team what happened in San Jose, and what the Lord had now spoken. Sure enough about 7 weeks later we played San Jose and Chicago in the playoffs and won. It was amazing to see how the team was so amazed and God was glorified. I had team personnel, coaches, and players come up to me with goose bumps saying that it was unbelievable. Obviously it was nothing I did, but God, who knows the end before the beginning used prophecy to demonstrate that “so that they might believe”…

While I know that some of you may think we are nuts, we are telling you this as 2009 is here and it really is against all hope that John would be in the NFL this year let alone have something amazing happen. He would be the oldest Rookie EVER in the NFL and he hasn’t even received a call to play in the NFL since 1999, in spite of 2 championships. He just recently herniated a disc in his back and two months ago he could hardly even walk, however, we know in the past that God has always been faithful and so we share with you now so that when it does happen “you may believe”.

Since 1999 we have received many confirmations along the way that keep us believing this is His will for us. For us, we could care less about being in the NFL in a worldly sense. We are good wherever the Lord takes us. In fact, John and I are planning to become missionaries as soon as he retires. He still loves playing but it would be more of a means to an end now because of the things we want to do in Africa. Until then we will continue to wait on the Lord in faith trusting in all the confirmations He’s given us along the way to hold on and wait and to not give up. According to another word we were given, it would make what happened with Kurt Warner and John Kitna seem minor.

So lets watch and see how the Almighty God will pull of this miracle with ease, and be amazed at how, as always, “nothing is impossible with God“. I hope that when it takes place “you will believe as well”… until then I’m fine being seen as a little nutty for His sake!!!

UPDATE ON JOHN’S LATEST TRIP TO UGANDA & ETHIOPIA

January 8th, 2009

INCREDIBLE!!!
John just returned from Africa a few weeks ago. As always, it was a life changing experience. Read below to get a sense of the incredible stories of what took place while they were there and the work that was done for each of our African Ministries.

Ethiopia:
During their stay in Ethiopia, John and the team was able to build a fence to secure the orphanage. It was a major blessing for everyone and it’s nice to know that orphanage and the children there will be better protected. They also visited a few other orphanages including our new orphanage in Debrebirhan, and an AIDS orphanage, which was very heart wrenching to say the least. They were also able to go with Joey & Destiny La Tourneau, who is new ministry partners for our M.A.R.K 10:14 program, onto the streets of Addis Ababa where they have an amazing ministry called Operation Daniel aimed at the orphaned street children. Here is a small excerpt from their trip.

“We went with Joey to see the street kids. We took a bus (NOTE: picture crowded people, animals all over, smells, etc) and then walked a little bit. When we got to the area, the kids began showing up. Today, there were about 8 kids between 6-12 years old. They were total street kids: filthy torn clothes, beat up shoes, some orphaned; but since becoming a part of Operation Daniel, have given their hearts to the Lord and are changing their lives and the lives around them. Joey started by asking how their week went and their stories were unbelievable. Joey had asked them earlier to not beg for money but to ask God to provide. One boy said he did that and God provided. It was awesome. One boy said that he showed Jesus’ love by obeying his family. He would normally not listen and just run away but this week he listened and obeyed. One kid said that the money he made, he bought things for his family, not himself. One kid shared the gospel with his friends and family. Joey then shared a story and then the kids worshipped and we all prayed. They are great kids who have absolutely nothing. Some of them have “homes” to go home to at night to sleep, but all day they are trying to sell things or just hanging out on the streets”.

Sudan:
The primary reason for the trip to Uganda was to meet up with a few of the Lost Boys to price out building materials and complete bids for the school in Sudan. In order to build in Sudan, you have to purchase everything in Uganda and then bring it in. John Dau, who was in the movie “God Grew Tired of Us”, is one of the lost boys John met up with. From the money he made in this movie, he was able to build a medical clinic and we are now working on a building a school in the same region. The people are returning from over 20 years of exile and have NOTHING! John said it was incredible to meet him and that he had an incredible presence about him. He is truly a hero! They were able to get everything accomplished which left time for them to pursue other ministry opportunities in the area as the Lord is calling us to this region. Read below for the most incredible journey John has had yet.

Uganda:
We are thrilled to see how God is going is moving in the beautiful country of Uganda. John had the chance to visit there in December with two other men, and of every trip he has taken, this was the most riveting and unforgettable. Before his departure, we had tried for weeks to set up in country meetings for him to check out on his 2 days off there. Though we were praying continuously for the Lord to show us what need He wanted us to get involved with there, it seemed as though He was closing every door. The missionaries just so happened to be visiting the states, other ministry offices were closed, etc. So John ventured out not having any idea where God was going to take him. It was a total step of faith entering a foreign country not knowing what move he would make next, and just praying that God would show up and open doors. Needless to say, did HE EVER!!! At first, they went to Youths for Christ (YFC) office, but the office just so happened to be closed that day. So they decided to go down to Calvary Chapel Kampala. While there they met up with a young man named Andrew, who had a ministry in the slums. He was getting ready to head down to the slums right when they showed up. The timing was too perfect. Had theYFC office been open, they would’ve never run into him. So they agreed to go with Andrew, though he warned them that not even Ugandan’s would enter this area. What he saw there was nothing short of heart stopping. Here is an excerpt from John’s trip.

“We met up with the guys from yesterday and headed out. We stopped by the outdoor shopping place and purchased clothes for the street kids. We went to a couple different markets so it was a great experience. We got 30 shirts and shorts/pants and then about 12 pairs of shoes. We then went to the slums. The kids were all very excited to see us again. We went into one of the rooms with all the kids. We each said a few words to the kids. I spoke about the Christmas story and what it means. The kids then sang a song to us and then I prayed over all the kids. One of the kids got up and wanted to pray for us. It was awesome. We then started to pass out the clothes. Derrick and martin had to push the kids around so they would be calm. There were a lot of different kids than yesterday. A lot more babies. Again, I cannot do it any justice with words. I got tons of pictures of the kids and their new clothes. Just breaking our hearts. We stayed there for awhile and then the guys took us to another part of the slums that was indescribable. The people here are from the eastern part of Uganda. This was the worst part of the slums, remember slums of Uganda not America. I went into one of the rooms (houses) and my heart stopped. There were about 3 ladies and about 4 kids. UNBELIEVABLE! They were not in good shape. Half naked and very skinny. Something you don’t want to see but when you see it you will never forget it. These people were living in the worst possible situation in Africa. That says something. We then went around and saw where the street kids sleep at night when there is no more room in the little buildings. It was a pile of trash and then there was a small wooden shed. I walked up and there were about 5 older boys sleeping in there. Around the back there was another boy sleeping in the mud. Again I cannot begin to describe these conditions. Worst of the worst. We then walked around more through the slums. Indescribable. Again it was an unbelievable day. Seeing the slums is something that will be with me the rest of my life”.

Now that John is back we know that God had put these children HEAVILY on our hearts, and in an urgent way. In fact, in the time that John was gone, his words were haunting me at home. I would weep just thinking about the immense suffering of these forgotten children. We are now praying heavily as to how the Lord wants us to meet the need He has brought us to. We will keep you updated as to what were working on and how you can help to get involved.

Mark 10:14
We are excited to announce a new ministry partnership we have with missionaries Joey & Destiny Le Tourneau who serve with Youth for Christ International. They coordinate YFCI’s global youth prayer movement, Operation Daniel. Operation Daniel is focused on seeing youth empowered by God through prayer. Daniel was so very young when he began to make such a huge impact with the Lord, yet Daniels impact didn’t come from his earthly position or qualifications, but through his intimate prayer connection to his Lord. Daniel 11:32 states: “The people that know their God shall be strong and carry out great exploits”.

Though Operation Daniel is geared towards youth of all ages and circumstances worldwide, much of its strategic focus begins with seeing at risk children, who are orphans or who live on the street, begin to realize their God given purpose stored deep within their hearts. Despite their unfortunate circumstances these children are being taught that like Daniel, they too have a purpose in life and were created to change the world around them. All these children need to find their purpose is to connect intimately with their Savior, Jesus Christ. John was able to stay with them while in Ethiopia and was blown away by the work they were doing! Here is a small, but awesome write up on the work they are doing:

“Melles and Kibrom (street kids) began speaking in Amharic quietly when they turned and asked for an Amharic Bible. I ran upstairs to get one, brought it back downstairs and they continued. Next thing I knew Melles and Kibrom were praying together as Kibrom asked Melles for Jesus to be the Lord of His life! It was so cool to watch Kibrom’s response afterwards, he wasn’t necessarily bouncing off the walls excited, but the day held so much meaning to him. His eyes were welled up and he couldn’t get over the fact that Jesus had just saved his life! Before we went further into the prayer time together, we took some time to really try and celebrate Kibrom.

Kibrom looked across to me just after we ended prayer and asked what the date was. I replied that it was the 23rd of December and he wrote it down on his exercise book for school. “I’ve never known my birthday.” Kibrom said. “I think I will make today my birthday. My life is changed.” Just feeling his heart, it was hard to contain myself.

Alex, Melles and I couldn’t help but ask if we could take him out to dinner to celebrate. We walked to a nearby hotel restaurant called Golf Club. It didn’t even occur to me that he hadn’t ever been to a place like it before. We ordered a few pizzas at Kibrom’s request, as pizza is a fairly popular food among a majority of restaurants in Addis. Kibrom had just taken a bite when I asked him if he really liked pizza. “I don’t know, I’ve never had it before,” he responded. “But it’s good!”

It’s been amazing to watch what God has been doing among so many of His children here in Addis. But even in a city like Addis it is easy to forget the lives these kids have grown up in, and Kibrom is much better off than many. Especially around Christmas, it was one of those nights together that you’re just in awe of God and how He is moving. The whole way home Kibrom asked question after question, trying to find out how He can begin spreading the love of Jesus He is now coming to know to the other boys at the home. “I want to help change their lives,” he said. Kibrom didn’t just want to know Jesus’ love; he decided right away that he needed to help lead the way for others. We felt blessed to be a part of Kibrom’s story tonight, so we felt we had to include you in his story as well.”

Why are you doing work in Africa, when so many people in our own country are suffering”?
I think it’s a great question and want to take the time to answer you. First, Gods word is very clear that we are supposed to go to “all nations to preach the gospel”. These were His final words before he ascended to the right hand of the father after his resurrection. If you were on your death bed, your last words to your children would probably not be general conversation, but the most important things you wanted them to know since you were soon no longer going to be with them. That is why these words should be so important to EVERY ONE OF US. God doesn’t only have a heart for American children, because in His eyes, every child on earth belongs to Him and it is his hope that “none should perish but that all would have everlasting life. God is not bound by their geographical location so why are we? After we die, will it matter that we met a need in Africa as well as on our own continent? His heart is that all who are suffering and living without Him would come to know Him. While we are involved in ministries on our own soil, and truly see an enormous need here, we have also seen firsthand the increased intensity of poverty & suffering in the other countries we are working in. It s not something that can be described by words alone. Approximately 75% of Americas poor has a refrigerator and a microwave and yet at the same time there are over 6 million orphaned children in Ethiopia alone. Orphans who are sleeping on the cold, muddy street or in piles of trash where they also scrap for food. They have no blankets, no roof over their head, no hospital that will treat their diseases, and no parents to care. They have NOTHING!!! We’ve seen precious 2 year old girls selling items on the streets at night!! Please tell me where the severity is such in America? It is a tragedy where ever it exists, but the extent of suffering there requires our attention.

2008 GIFT CATALOG

December 22nd, 2008

In James 1:27 the bible says that “Pure and faultless religion is this: to look after orphans and widows
in their distress”. In Matthew 18:5 Jesus said, “Whoever welcomes a little child like this in My name
welcomes Me”.

Because orphans are precious to Jesus, we feel that it is a must for us to care for them as
commanded continually in scripture. Through our orphanages, we are being His hands and feet.
Our orphanages minister to children with nowhere else to go. Most have been orphaned by disease,
AIDS, disaster, and/ or have been abandoned, neglected, or abused by their parents.

Just a small amount can cover one child in the orphanage who is given lodging, food, an education, medical
care, and a place to call home. With your support we can continue to build a place to welcome another
hurting child who needs to hear the Good News of Christ’s redeeming love. It is the very heart of God
to care for these children. Will you join us?

College of the Siskiyous – Fellowship of Christian Athletes

December 22nd, 2008

We have just started Fellowship of Christian Athletes on the College of the Siskiyous campus and as of the second week we’ve had over 22 athletes show up! John & I are both leading it together (he leads it mainly and I just make all of the food) and we are really enjoying it. Every Thursday night we gather with a bunch of college athletes and spend time together eating, fellowshipping with one another, and spending time in God’s word. Please pray that it continues to grow and that God will continue to speak to these kids through us. We take this ministry very serious as we have heard a statistic that states “if a person doesn’t accept the Lord before they leave their teenage years, there’s an 80% chance they never will”. We are ministering to them at a pivotal time in their lives. Pray also, that God would draw their hearts to him.

DEBREBIRHAN PROJECT

December 22nd, 2008

We are excited to announce the opening of a second orphanage under Hope 4 Africa and Covenant Orphanage. Located in Debrebirhan, Ethiopia, the Debrebirhan project is making an impact on the lives of children affected by HIV/ AIDS. In this community a large number of people are HIV + or are suffering from AIDS. The children who reside in Covenant Orphanage, for the most part, have become orphans due to the AIDS related death of one or both parents. Currently there are nine orphan children who are residing there from ages 3-12 years old. They are all HIV negative. As a member of the “family” at the Debrebirhan Orphanage, each child is now receiving:

  • An education at the best local school in the area
  • 3 meals a day
  • Love & nurturing care from the Debrebirhan staff
  • Spiritual training & discipleship
  • Life skills training
  • A warm bed to sleep in
  • A place to call home
  • While this is a significant step forward it is also represents a new need for support. Aside from the financial support we are providing to help meet the primary needs of the children and the orphanage, it was opened only a few months ago and is in need of some required repairs among other things. Here is a list of some of the current living and maintenance needs:

  • Shelves for storage
  • Couches
  • Dining room table & chairs
  • Bread baking oven
  • General repairs to lights, fixtures, flooring, etc.
  • We are hoping to raise some assistance so we can to continue to provide support for not only Debrebirhan and Covenant Orphanage, but it is our hope to be able to open another similar orphanage as soon as feasible and bring in even more children from off of the streets. With your help, this can be a reality. Will you consider joining our team to make a difference in the lives of these children as well as future children who are still waiting for a place to call home? With your help we can truly answer Gods call to care for orphans. Please click here to make an online donation now. 100% of your donation will go directly to these programs. Thank you for your generosity.
